Task One and Two: Successful and Developing Physical Skills and Features

Image
Task One: Successful Physical Skills in Kathak Performance One physical skill which I feel I have executed confidently and effectively in the final performance was  my use of coordination and alignment. I feel that whenever coordination was used within my piece I would always be able to show it well to the audience; for example when my hands would move so would my eyes and the focus would always be placed onto my hands. In the picture below I feel I used this well and efficiently in my performance, one of the lines that portrayed this well was the word "emerald" I used the mudra of putti g both of my hands together and in the air to show the idea of me holding an emerald and I am coordinating my focus of my eyes towards my hands. In this picture I feel that I am also showing good alignment and posture because my feet are turned out in first position and my body is in a tall and upright position. Task One: Developing Physical Skills in Kathak Performance One physical skill whi...

Kathak

‘Dancing in the street’ paragraph 3  https://youtu.be/4TOkLq8wG1Q Chakkars  A chakkars is a spin that is a critical element in the Jaipur gharana of Kathak dance.  The dancers arm is usually held out and there knees are bent to help them increase there momentum when Turing.  Here are a couple of examples where I use Chakkars with in my piece with my group.  As you can see in these photos we have our legs bent out arm out straight so it gives us the momentum that we need to turn.  Chakkars are known as a ballet turn with in Northan India however, there's a lot of contrast between the two because when you do a chakkar turn your knees are bent and low with you arm out and feet turned out in first position where as with a balletic turn your legs are straight and arms are in or sometimes in a different position with an upright posture.

Bob Fosse  Bob Fosse worked as a choreographer in Chicago and All That Jazz, he also used to work in the navy.  Some of his famous shows:- Chicago was in 1975 All That Jazz was in 1979  The Pajama Game was in 1954 Pippin was in 1972 Critics would say that Bob Fosse jazz technique was slouchy and that it had bad posture they also used to say that it was pointless as there hats covered their faces. Bob Fosse and his work is so famous as the style ended up being linked to multiple Broadway musicals  In this picture you can see the dancers using hats as a prop. Bob first started using hats in his work mainly because of his own self consciousness he used to also wear gloves as he didn’t like hands.  The dancers in this photo are using the rolled back shoulders technique that Bob Fosse used loads especially like this such as the splayed fingers, side ways shuffles and turned out knees.  Bob fosses style was very slow and sexy; he used a lot of sensuality througho...

The Stylistic Features of Jazz Dance

Image
The stylistic features of jazz dance  This picture is showing isolations, isolation’s are used at the beginning of jazz dance classes in order to help loosen up the body as you have to move your hips or ribs to the beat of the music similar to how the African slaves danced to Jazz music they moved only one part of the body while the rest of the body remains still.  This photo is showing dancers using a low centre of gravity which is to keep balance dancers tend to use a low center of gravity and soft knee’s because it helps maintain transitions from one movement to the next.  This photo is showing a contraction which is the contrast between desire and duty. The respected use of contractions and releases give a rhythmic energy to the movements in this technique given by choreographer Martha Graham.  This photo is of a dancer using sensuality which is dance that is supposed to look sexy so it tends to use a lot of things like hip thrusting and buttocks movements. ...

The Historical Context of Jazz Dance

Image
The historical context of Jazz Q.1. Slaves started travelling from Africa to America in the 16th to the 19th century in the year of 1526. The main reason that slaves travelled from Africa to America was because they were forced to be taken there for the slave trade to make them do jobs that no one else wanted.  Q.2. Music and dance culture was really important to the African slaves this was because it really helped them take there mind off of the fact that they were being controlled by these white plantation owners. They believed that if they were singing and dancing there way through the day it would make the day go faster and not be as painful as it was already. They used to use music mainly by telling stories about there work or about their past lives and what they’d been through.  Q.3. The dance and music of the African origin formed a starting point for Jazz music and dance as both of these can be seen in close relationship between the body movement and music. Jazz dance ...
