The Historical Context of Jazz Dance

The historical context of Jazz

Q.1. Slaves started travelling from Africa to America in the 16th to the 19th century in the year of 1526. The main reason that slaves travelled from Africa to America was because they were forced to be taken there for the slave trade to make them do jobs that no one else wanted.

Q.2. Music and dance culture was really important to the African slaves this was because it really helped them take there mind off of the fact that they were being controlled by these white plantation owners. They believed that if they were singing and dancing there way through the day it would make the day go faster and not be as painful as it was already. They used to use music mainly by telling stories about there work or about their past lives and what they’d been through.

Q.3. The dance and music of the African origin formed a starting point for Jazz music and dance as both of these can be seen in close relationship between the body movement and music. Jazz dance is a very rhythmic style and was similar to how the way that the African origins danced back in the day. This was done because it is a patterning of the human body in time and the space in order to give expression to ideas and emotions.

Q.4. In the 20th century the Jazz dance style started to developed more; overtime the music became more rhythmic however, different subcategories of Jazz decided to evolve into less danceable music such as cool jazz and free jazz. The tempo started to become either too slow or way to fast.

Q.5. Jazz is a music genre that originated in the New Orleans United States the late 19th and early 20th centuries and developed the genre.
