Bob Fosse- Jazz Dance Choreographer

Bob Fosse  Bob Fosse worked as a choreographer in Chicago and All That Jazz, he also used to work in the navy.  Some of his famous shows:- Chicago was in 1975 All That Jazz was in 1979  The Pajama Game was in 1954 Pippin was in 1972 Critics would say that Bob Fosse jazz technique was slouchy and that it had bad posture they also used to say that it was pointless as there hats covered their faces. Bob Fosse and his work is so famous as the style ended up being linked to multiple Broadway musicals  In this picture you can see the dancers using hats as a prop. Bob first started using hats in his work mainly because of his own self consciousness he used to also wear gloves as he didn’t like hands.  The dancers in this photo are using the rolled back shoulders technique that Bob Fosse used loads especially like this such as the splayed fingers, side ways shuffles and turned out knees.  Bob fosses style was very slow and sexy; he used a lot of sensuality throughout his dances also he utilise

The stylistic features of jazz dance  This picture is showing isolations, isolation’s are used at the beginning of jazz dance classes in order to help loosen up the body as you have to move your hips or ribs to the beat of the music similar to how the African slaves danced to Jazz music they moved only one part of the body while the rest of the body remains still.  This photo is showing dancers using a low centre of gravity which is to keep balance dancers tend to use a low center of gravity and soft knee’s because it helps maintain transitions from one movement to the next.  This photo is showing a contraction which is the contrast between desire and duty. The Historical Context of Jazz Dance

The historical context of Jazz Q.1. Slaves started travelling from Africa to America in the 16th to the 19th century in the year of 1526. The main reason that slaves travelled from Africa to America was because they were forced to be taken there for the slave trade to make them do jobs that no one else wanted.  Q.2. Music and dance culture was really important to the African slaves this was because it really helped them take there mind off of the fact that they were being controlled by these white plantation owners. They believed that if they were singing and dancing there way through the day it would make the day go faster and not be as painful as it was already. They used to use music mainly by telling stories about there work or about their past lives and what they’d been through.  Q.3.
